How far is Tulum from Cancún Airport?

How to get from Cancún Airport to Tulum

The whole trip runs on Highway 307, the federal road that traces the coast south from Cancun through Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen and Akumal before it reaches Tulum. It is divided highway for most of the distance, with the limit dropping sharply through each town and speed bumps at the junctions. Your driver takes the same road whichever hotel you booked; only the last few minutes differ, depending on whether you are staying in Tulum town, on the beach road through the hotel zone, or in Aldea Zama.

We schedule 105 minutes for the drive and that holds for most of the day. The part that varies is the first half hour, where traffic builds around the Cancun hotel zone turn-off in the late afternoon, and the final stretch in high season, because the Tulum beach road is one lane each way and carries a lot of foot and bike traffic. Landing between about 4pm and 7pm is when you are most likely to see the slower end of the range.

A private transfer, which is what this page books, runs from the arrivals hall to your hotel door at a price fixed before you travel, with the driver waiting for the time your flight actually lands rather than the time it was scheduled. The ADO bus is the direct public option and goes from the terminal to the Tulum bus station in town, which works well if you are travelling light and staying centrally, and leaves you to arrange the last leg if you are not. The Tren Maya has a station at the airport and another outside Tulum, so it covers the distance clear of road traffic but still leaves a connection at the far end. Taxis are available at the airport, and a rental car earns its keep if you plan to drive to cenotes and ruins during the week rather than only to the hotel.

One thing worth knowing before you book anything: Tulum now has its own airport, Felipe Carrillo Puerto (TQO), a short drive from town. If your dates are flexible and you are staying in Tulum the whole trip, flying into TQO removes this drive entirely. Most people still land at Cancun because it has far more routes and more competitive fares.
