Cancún Airport guide

The hour between landing at Cancun Airport and reaching your hotel is the part of the trip people arrange last and think about most. Cancún Airport terminals

Cancun has four terminal buildings and three of them handle scheduled passengers. Terminal 2 is the oldest and takes both domestic and international flights, and it is where Viva and Volaris operate along with most domestic and Central and South American services. Terminal 3 is international only and is where the large US, Canadian and European carriers arrive. Terminal 4 handles both domestic and international flights and is home to airlines including Aeromexico, Air France and JetBlue. Terminal 1 is closed and being rebuilt, with a planned reopening in 2026; when it operated it served charter and private flights.

You do not choose your terminal. Your airline does, and it is printed on your boarding pass and in your booking confirmation. If you are not sure, check the airline rather than guessing, because the terminals are separate buildings rather than wings of one hall, and walking between them is not practical with luggage.

The terminals are linked by a free inter-terminal shuttle bus that runs roughly every ten minutes. You would normally only need it if you are connecting between two flights that use different terminals, or if someone is collecting you from a different building. For a straightforward arrival you clear immigration and customs in the terminal you landed in, and leave from that same building.

Arriving at Cancún Airport step by step

The order is the same in every terminal. You walk from the aircraft to immigration, then to baggage reclaim, then through customs, and only then into the public arrivals area.

At immigration an officer scans your passport and records your entry. Mexico has moved away from the old paper tourist card at its major airports, so at Cancun you are generally not handed a form to fill in and keep. What matters is that your entry is recorded and that you know how long you are permitted to stay, so check whatever the officer gives you or stamps before you walk away from the desk.

After immigration you collect your bags. Then comes customs, which is run by Mexico's tax authority, the SAT, and which works differently from most countries. Every arriving passenger completes a customs declaration, and then presses a button that triggers a two-colour light. Green means you walk through with no inspection. Red means your bags are screened. It is random. A red light is not an accusation and does not mean anything has gone wrong; it is simply how the selection is made.

Past customs you enter an exit corridor that leads to the public hall and then to the doors. This corridor is the part of the journey most first-time arrivals are unprepared for, and it is covered in the next section.

Scams and timeshare sellers in the arrivals hall

Between customs and the exit doors you pass a run of desks and people who will approach you directly. Some are car rental counters. Some are branded to look like tourist information or a transport desk. Many of them are commercial operators rather than an official airport service, and the approach is well practised: a friendly question about where you are staying, an offer of a free excursion, a resort day pass or dining credit, and an invitation to a short presentation in exchange.

The presentation is usually a timeshare or vacation club pitch. Travellers consistently report that a session described as ninety minutes runs far longer and is high pressure. Nobody is in danger here. The cost is your first afternoon and, if you sign something, a good deal more.

The single most useful fact about this corridor is a structural one: no legitimate transport meets you inside it. Pre-booked transfers, authorised airport taxis and the ADO bus all operate from outside the terminal building, past the sliding doors. So if someone inside the corridor is offering you a ride, they are not the transport you booked, whatever they say about your hotel or your booking reference.

Getting past does not require being rude. Keep walking towards the exit. You do not have to say where you are staying, and a short no thank you without breaking stride is what most regular visitors do. It is a great deal easier when the ride is already booked and paid for, because there is nothing left for anyone in that corridor to sell you.

Taxis at Cancún Airport

Cancun airport taxis are an authorised, regulated system rather than an open rank. Only permitted operators may pick up at the terminals, drivers carry airport identification and wear a uniform, and authorised vehicles display a permit on the windscreen. Service runs 24 hours from every operating terminal, and if you land with nothing arranged, this is the option to use.

Two things catch out people used to metered cabs. The ride is arranged rather than hailed: you buy or confirm it at an authorised counter before you travel. And airport transport here is sold as a fixed fare by destination zone rather than by meter, so what you pay is what you are quoted at the counter on the day. Quintana Roo's taxi union proposed fitting meters to Cancun cabs from early 2026, but that plan covers city taxis; the airport is a federal zone and sits outside it.

Which makes the friction easy to state. You will not know what the ride costs until you are standing at a counter with your luggage, after a flight, and possibly in a queue. Agree the price and the exact hotel before the car moves, because several hotel names repeat along this coast and a wrong turn here is a long one.

Can you use Uber at Cancún Airport?

Uber operates in Quintana Roo and lists Cancun airport pickups on its own site. Both of those are true, and neither is an answer to the question people are actually asking, which is whether a car will come and collect them from arrivals.

Mexico's transport ministry, the SICT, stated in October 2025 that services provided through app companies hold no authorisation from the ministry to operate at the country's airports, Cancun among more than seventy, and that the operators permitted to pick up passengers inside the airport perimeter are the authorised taxis, authorised tourist transport and authorised buses. Uber holds a court suspension limiting how the National Guard may act towards its drivers, and the ministry was explicit that a suspension is not an authorisation.

In practice the product that reliably serves the terminal is Uber Taxi, which dispatches an authorised airport taxi through the Uber app. A standard UberX request at the terminal is declined more often than it would be in a city centre, and you discover which way it went after you have landed rather than before.

If you want to know who is collecting you and what it costs, an app request made on the ground is the wrong tool for the job. Something arranged before you fly removes the question.

Getting from Cancún Airport to your hotel

Where you are staying changes the drive far more than which terminal you land in. The Hotel Zone is the short run, a straight shot north east from the airport. Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen and Playacar sit progressively further down Highway 307. Puerto Aventuras, Akumal and Tulum are a genuine drive south, and Tulum in particular is long enough that it is worth knowing the time before you book anything.
