Montego Bay Airport guide

Montego Bay is an easy airport to clear and a hard one to leave well. Negril is a long drive west and Ocho Rios a long drive east, and the price of either is something most arrivals first hear at a desk, on the day, after a flight. We fix it before you fly, track the flight, and include the meet and greet at MBJ arrivals. Montego Bay Airport: one terminal, two sides

Sangster has a single passenger terminal, which makes it simpler to navigate than most airports carrying this many people. Standing in front of it, departures are on the left and arrivals and ground transport are on the right. Inside, the departure side splits into east and west concourses, which matters when you are flying home and not at all when you are landing.

The airport is named after Sir Donald Sangster, Jamaica's second prime minister. It has been privately managed since 2003 by MBJ Airports Limited, whose majority shareholder is Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacifico, and it is built for around nine million passengers a year against the four and a half million it handled in 2025.

It sits about five kilometres east of central Montego Bay. Close enough that the hotels on the strip are minutes away, and far enough that everywhere else on the north coast is a real drive.

Arriving at Montego Bay Airport step by step

The order is immigration, then baggage, then customs, then the arrivals hall. Have your passport and the QR code from your declaration ready before you join the line.

Baggage reclaim has luggage carts at no charge, and Red Cap porters who will take your bags to the exit. They are an airport service rather than an approach you need to fend off, and a tip is the normal way to settle it.

Customs at Sangster is organised into lanes rather than one queue: one for passengers with nothing to declare, one for passengers with items to declare, and one for wheelchair users, unaccompanied minors and anyone else who needs assistance. If you are declaring something, the airport asks that it is listed on your declaration and that you have the invoice or receipt with you. An officer takes your passport and your declaration and processes you there.

Past customs you come out into the arrivals hall, where the transfer and tour desks, the currency exchange and the taxi desk all are. Everything you actually need is in this one room, and so is everybody who would like your attention.

The Jamaica immigration and customs form (C5)

Everyone arriving in Jamaica files the Immigration and Customs Declaration Form, known as the C5. It is completed online before you travel, on the government portal at enterjamaica.gov.jm, which is run jointly by the Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency and Jamaica Customs. The form itself is free.

Jamaica's tourist board suggests filing it the day before you arrive rather than leaving it until you are at the airport. Every traveller has one of their own, children included, and what you carry on the day is the QR code it produces. The customs half asks what you are bringing in, and the guidance printed on the form itself is worth taking at face value: if you are in any doubt about an item, declare it to the officer.

The arrival lounge and fast track at Montego Bay Airport

The lounge people search for at Sangster is usually Club MoBay, which is run by VIP Attractions rather than by the airport. It has an arrival side and a departure side and they are different products, so it is worth being clear which one you are looking at. The one that matters when you land is the arrival service.

On arrival it is a host who greets guests as they come off the aircraft, walks them through immigration and customs in a priority lane, helps collect bags, and takes them to a small lounge with seating, washrooms and refreshments while they wait for their ride. It is booked ahead on the operator's own site, and they ask travellers to reserve rather than turn up, because demand outruns the space.

Two things are worth stating plainly. It is a separate purchase from your transfer and is not bundled with one, and it is a way of moving through the building faster rather than a way of skipping any part of the entry process. Who will approach you in the arrivals hall

Montego Bay does not have the long timeshare corridor that Cancun and Los Cabos do. What it has is a busy arrivals hall where several different kinds of people will speak to you, and it helps to know which is which before you are in it.

The Red Caps are airport porters and are doing a job. The transfer and tour desks are commercial, and some will offer you an excursion at a price that comes with a sales presentation attached, which is your call to make. The one to be careful about is the driver who walks up and offers you a cheaper ride than the desk, because the authorised taxis at this airport do not work that way.

Jamaica makes a licensed vehicle easy to identify, and it is worth the two seconds of looking. A public passenger vehicle carries a red number plate, and the Transport Authority asks passengers to check that the driver is wearing the Authority's badge before getting in. None of which you have to weigh up at all if the ride is already booked and paid for.

Taxis at Montego Bay Airport

Two companies are authorised to work the airport, JUTA and JCAL, and they share a single Authorised Airport Taxi desk. The airport's own directions put it just outside the customs exit: come through, carry on, and look for the taxi sign above the counter. If you land with nothing arranged, that desk is where to go.

The fare is agreed rather than metered, and it is agreed at that counter on the day. So the cost of the longest part of your journey, the drive to Negril or along the coast to Ocho Rios, is a number you first hear after a flight, in a queue, with your luggage at your feet. Settle the destination and the price before you walk out to the car, and be precise about which hotel you mean.

The vehicle is the other unknown. The authorised fleets run everything from cars to vans, and which one you get depends on what is on the rank when you reach the front of it. A family of six with cases and a child seat to fit is not a detail to discover at that point.

Can you use Uber at Montego Bay Airport?

Uber does run in Montego Bay. It launched here in February 2024, three years after Kingston, and the local product is Uber Taxi, which dispatches contract carriage drivers affiliated with the Montego Bay based Maxi Taxi Association through the app. Uber publishes a Sangster International Airport page and says a pickup can be arranged there.

What the app cannot tell you in advance is how many of those drivers are near the terminal when your flight lands. The authorised desk inside the hall is the arrangement the airport itself runs and it is staffed for every arrival. A request at midnight on a Sunday is a very different proposition from one on a weekday afternoon in town.

Distance is the other thing an app handles badly here. Montego Bay to Negril, or the run east to Ocho Rios, is not a city hop, and a driver deciding whether to take a job of that length at that hour, after your flight has already landed, is not something you want the evening to depend on.

For a first arrival, and particularly one with children, luggage and a drive to the other end of the island ahead of it, the ride worth having is the one that already exists when you walk out of the doors.

Getting from Montego Bay Airport to your hotel

Almost everyone who lands at Sangster turns either east or west, and the two directions are different days out. East on the A1, the north coast highway, takes you through Ironshore and Rose Hall, then Falmouth and the Trelawny resorts, then Braco and Runaway Bay, and finally Ocho Rios at the far end. West is the run through Lucea to Negril, the one first time visitors most often underestimate, and the reason a private car is worth more at this airport than at many others.

Montego Bay itself is the exception. It is minutes from the terminal, and worth saying out loud because a hotel on the strip is a genuinely short ride rather than a journey.
