How to get from Montego Bay Airport to Negril

Negril is west of the airport, and the road there is the A1 running along the coast through Reading and Hopewell, then on to Lucea, the parish capital of Hanover. After Lucea you carry on through Green Island before the road turns south and drops down to Negril and the long beach. It is a coastal road rather than a highway for much of the way, which is why it is a pretty drive and also why it is not a fast one.

Our scheduled time is 80 minutes and that is a clear run. The towns are where it stretches: Reading and Hopewell sit right on the road with the limit down and people crossing, and in the middle of the day it can take noticeably longer than the schedule suggests. If you are flying out, this is the route where the pickup time we set will look early relative to the raw drive, and that is deliberate.

A private transfer takes you from arrivals to your hotel with the fare fixed in advance and the driver tracking your flight, which matters here because the drive is long enough that a delayed landing would otherwise leave you rebooking. Shared shuttles are sold at the airport and cost less per person, though on a route this length the stops at other hotels along Seven Mile Beach add up. Knutsford Express runs scheduled coaches to Negril and is a reasonable choice if you can manage the last leg to your hotel. Route taxis operate between the towns. Renting a car is the least common choice on this route, since most Negril visitors stay on or near the beach and walk.

Worth knowing: Negril spreads along Seven Mile Beach and then up onto the West End cliffs, which are a further few minutes past the roundabout. The cliffs and the beach are different ends of town, so the hotel you pick changes the last part of the drive more than it changes the main run.
