How to get from Montego Bay Airport to Ocho Rios

The drive east from Sangster follows the A1, the North Coast Highway, which stays close to the sea for most of the run. You pass Falmouth, then Duncans, Discovery Bay and Runaway Bay before coming into Ocho Rios from the west. It is a well surfaced road and the scenery is the reason people remember this transfer: the Caribbean is on your left for long stretches, and the road runs through working coastal towns rather than resort strip, so it looks like the island rather than a corridor.

Falmouth has a cruise pier, and on ship days the traffic through the town adds time in both directions, which matters most if you are heading back to the airport on a morning flight. The second is the towns themselves, where the limit drops and there is pedestrian traffic. There is an inland alternative that trims a little distance but loses the coast, and drivers take it when the coastal road is blocked rather than as the default.

A private transfer is the door to door version, with the price agreed before you travel and the driver holding for your actual landing time rather than the scheduled one. Shared shuttles are sold at the airport and are cheaper per seat, with the usual trade that they wait to fill and then call at other hotels along the north coast, which on a 100 minute route can add a lot. Knutsford Express runs scheduled coaches between the main towns and is a solid option if you are comfortable getting yourself from their stop to the hotel. Licensed route taxis operate locally. A rental car is worth considering only if you plan to explore beyond the resort, since most Ocho Rios hotels are self contained.

If you are booked at a hotel between Runaway Bay and Ocho Rios, check the zone on your confirmation rather than the town name on your booking, because several properties advertise as Ocho Rios but sit some way west of it.
