How to get from Punta Cana Airport to Bayahíbe / La Romana

This is the easiest long transfer in the Dominican Republic, because almost all of it is on one road. The Autopista del Coral runs from just outside Punta Cana Airport west to La Romana, four lanes the whole way, opened in 2012 specifically to link the two. Before it existed the same trip took around two hours on local roads. There are toll plazas on the route; those tolls are inside the price you pay us, so nothing is collected from you in the car.

We schedule 70 minutes to the Bayahibe and La Romana hotels. The highway itself is the quick part and holds its time well, because it bypasses the towns rather than running through them. What varies is the last section after you come off at the Bayahibe and Dominicus exit, where the resort access roads are slower, and the final approach to the Casa de Campo properties, which are spread over a large estate.

A private transfer is the straightforward option here and the one most people take, with a fixed price, a driver meeting you inside arrivals and no toll or fuel stops to settle. Shared shuttles exist but are less common on this corridor than on the Punta Cana and Bavaro runs, because the hotels are further apart. Local guaguas, the shared minibuses, connect the towns and are part of everyday life on the island, though they are not practical straight off a long flight with cases. Taxis are available at the airport. A rental car is useful if you want to see Altos de Chavon, Santo Domingo or the east coast beaches under your own steam.

If Saona or Catalina island is on your list, Bayahibe is where those boats leave from, so staying at this end of the coast puts you at the departure point rather than an hour from it.
